Growing Durian From Seed

Many people are shocked that I'm able to grow durian from seed. I guess even people in the metropolis view it as an "exotic" fruit, as it comes mainly from the south. But I'm telling you, the fruit can grow in Metro Manila! My tito who lives in a Paranaque subdivision was able to grow the sweetest durian ever-- on land that is coastal and primarily former wetland. Or actually, typical Manila suburbs. He just dumped copious amounts of compost on it.

Anyhow, either I soak the seeds in water for a day or two, or dump them in really damp compost, and they begin to sprout little yellow things (as pictured above). These will become roots and will bear into the ground. Later on, the seeds will lift up off the ground as the stem grows. The stem will be rough and twisty like an elephant's trunk!

It's pretty easy to grow, I think if you toss it in compost it will do just fine.

I don't wait a day or two, I put it in water or compost right away :) But sometimes some days after, if I have forgotten

Lars, Mar 21 2009? Perhaps you are already tending your durian plant! I had my durian seeds (D24) germinated in 2 days.
Thoroughly wash and remove the flesh and all the grimy staff from the seed with a scrotching pad. Then, wrap the seeds in clean moist tissue paper (or cotton wool) and lay them on moist tissue papers in a transprent plastic container. Close the cover tight. Leave them in any place (except under the sun or in the fridge).
Within 3 days the seeds should germinate. The larger "cracked" seeds will germinate first.
The "Jiu Jee" (small flatten type) seeds will not grow. If you cut them open, they are usually undeveloped or damaged with no nutrients inside. Durianon

about 3 weeks ago, i harvested 5 durian seeds from a fresh fruit for planting. 2 have grown primary roots, the third has cracked and the fourth, i hope would soon follow. i wrapped 4 of them in wet tissue paper, sealed it in a plastic bag and left it alone for a while. of this batch, 1 grew a primary, while another has cracked open, possibly before growing one. the other 2 are still inactive. the fifth one, i planted on a 4" diameter seeding cup. after 3 weeks, you could see the primary bursting literally from the cup. i hope this helps.

actually, my problem now is: how can i make it flower and bear fruit in 5 years. i have been reading on cultivating the tree and it seems it takes about 15 years for it to bear fruit. any help or ideas?
